Natural Remedies for the Treatment of Acne during Menopause

Acne During MenopauseOne of the symptoms of the onset of menopause is acne. It is not exactly like the acne everyone has in their younger years. It is deeper and not seen on the skin’s surface as much. The common type of acne during menopause tends to be what is known as microcystic acne which, as the name implies, is the formation of small and tender cysts that form deeply below surface skin. Of course, no one wants acne and it just adds to the stress caused by other menopause symptoms. So there are natural remedies you can apply to treat it.

Causes of Menopause Acne

The root cause of acne during menopause is an imbalance in hormones. Throughout the skin there are sebaceous glands which produce skin oil known as sebum. Sebum is important for protecting the skin from bacteria and minimizing water loss. Moisturized skin is also skin that is healthy and soft

However, before and during menopause, the hormonal imbalance causes sensitivity in the sebaceous glands which in turn produces more sebum. This is in addition to an accumulation of dead skin cells that are the result of the skin’s regenerative process. Here again, around the time of the onset of menopause, there are more dead skin cells.

The mix of too much sebum and too many dead skin cells causes pores to clog thus acne lesions and bumps begin to appear. Bacteria feeds off of the sebum and is trapped in the clogged cells therefore you get the pus that is characteristic of acne.

Treating Menopause Acne

Menopause acne is actually the same as when you were a teenager. It’s just deeper in most cases. Treatment options include:

• Diet
• Topical scrubs
• Exercise
• Hydration
• Minimizing makeup

A diet that is low in fat and simple carbohydrates and high in calcium and fiber is good for keeping insulin levels in check. Insulin spikes result in the production of another hormone known as androgen. A rise in androgen can result in an increase in sebum production. Food sources with vitamins A, B, and C all work at promoting skin that is healthy. You also get healthy fiber by eating whole grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables.

Topical scrubs are good for exfoliation which is removing dead skin cells so that they don’t clog pores. The one thing you need to keep in mind is to not scrub your skin too harshly because this will cause more irritation which in turn will produce more sebum.

Over-the-counter acne scrubs such as those containing benzoyl peroxide are typically harsh with their chemical additives so it is better to try natural scrubs. One such scrub is made by taking sugar or salt, mixing with a little water, and lightly rubbing the area to exfoliate.

Other natural topical treatments for exfoliating include tea tree oil, baking soda and calendula. You can make a solution of baking soda and lemon juice that has shown effectiveness in exfoliating as well. Plus, it is inexpensive because these are common ingredients found in the kitchen of any home. All of these disinfect the skin of bacteria without causing further irritation.

You also want to make sure that you stay well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water because it flushes your pores out by removing impurities from them. These impurities can also contribute to acne if not removed from your skin.

Then there is exercise. The advantage of having a regular exercise routine is that you sweat which helps to clean out pours as well. Just make sure that you shower after a strenuous workout.

Also watch your makeup. Don’t put it on too heavily because it will also clog pores. Choosing your makeup is important as well. Look for makeup products that are hypoallergenic and oil-free.

As you can see, treatment of acne around the time of menopause is really no different than treating the condition in general. It’s just maybe a little annoying to have to do it one more time since you were a young adult.
